Cutting Placage bois (feuille) at 1 mm with a Kern Laser Systems HSE

This page describes a laser cutting setting published for Placage bois (feuille) at 1 mm, tested on a Kern Laser Systems HSE fitted with a CO2 150W source (10,600 nm CO2, 150 W). It states the exact machine, source, material, thickness and operation of the test; power, speed and number of passes are shown with a Premium pass.

Why those four facts matter: a cutting setting that works on Placage bois (feuille) at 1 mm does not transfer to another thickness, nor to another source. A 10,600 nm CO2 rated 150 W does not deposit the same energy as a stronger module, and the speed has to be adjusted accordingly. Copying a number without checking those four points is the first cause of a ruined part.

Published by LaserSettings (estimation). No other workshop has confirmed it yet: treat it as a starting point, and confirm it from your account if you reproduce it.

No photo comes with this setting yet. If you reproduce it, publish yours from your account: a picture of the result is worth more than a line of numbers.

Recommended routine before running the part: clean the lens, redo the focus, engrave a small test grid on an offcut of the same Placage bois (feuille), then adjust the speed rather than the power. Work with fume extraction and air assist, wear glasses rated for 10,600 nm CO2, and never leave the machine unattended.

About Kern Laser Systems machines

Kern Laser Systems builds large-format CO2 and fibre systems for industrial production, with beds several metres long. Settings are documented per approved material and thickness, and assume extraction and optics maintained on a schedule rather than by feel.

What to know about Placage bois (feuille)

Veneer is a sheet of real wood from 0.6 to 1 mm, used for marquetry, wooden business cards and surface facing. Its thinness changes everything: the laser goes through almost instantly, and the difficulty is not power but holding the sheet flat.

Divide your usual settings: 18% at 3,500 mm/min for engraving, 45% at 900 mm/min for cutting with a 20 W diode. Any excess power burns the back face and warps the sheet.

Focus must be perfect: on 0.6 mm, half a millimetre of error turns a fine engraving into a wide, blurred line.

Common veneers are 0.6 mm (marquetry) and 1 mm (cards, facing). Some come backed with paper: paper burns differently from wood, always run a test.

Main pitfall: the sheet flies off. The air assist flow alone is enough to lift it and ruin a cut. Use a honeycomb bed with suction, magnets on the edges, or a low-tack adhesive over the whole back face.
